When mother and baby are separated at feeding times, such as when the mom returns to work, a breast pump is used to relieve the breast, maintain the milk supply and obtain milk for use later. Some moms have flat or inverted nipples. A breastpump can help draw them out. Sometimes breasts become engorged, making it difficult for the baby to latch on properly. A breast pump can be used to pump a little milk to soften the nipple and areola. Pumping can stimulate the production of milk in cases where the milk supply is low. A breast pump is also used to provide breast milk in cases where the baby is to ill or premature to breastfeed.
    There are a wide variety of breast pumps available at Birth and Baby, from inexpensive manual breast pumps to hospital grade electric breast pumps. We also carry the new Whittlestone Expresser, a new concept in breast pump design. We have been very impressed with it so far, not only for general use but in cases of flat or inverted nipples as well. For very occasional use, a manual or mini-electric breastpump will usually be fine. Avoid the cheap pumps often sold at drugstores and mass market distributors. They can be difficult and painful to use and are often ineffective, resulting in frustration and weaning. Our IBCLC certified lactation consultant offers free e-mail consultations on the proper and effective use of breastpumps purchased from us. If you should chose to buy a breastpump elsewhere, be sure the seller has the knowledge and experience to back up the product.
    My product selection has been distilled from my experience as a mother, a childbirth educator, a Certified Lactation Consultant, and two decades of study, work, and breastfeeding experience. Also, I am a trained childbirth Doula and I taught natural childbirth classes for 11 years. I have had a retail business selling breastfeeding-related items since 1986.
